Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque: Entry, Dress Code and Which Tour to Book
4 min read
The answer first
You do not need a tour to see the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. The mosque runs free guided walk-in tours itself, in English and Arabic only, and visitors can also go in alone after registering for an online access pass. A booked tour makes sense if you want a longer guided visit, entry already paid, or the mosque combined with other stops. For a focused visit, the guided walking tour at the Grand Mosque is the simplest match: €17.81 per person, 4.7 stars from 562 reviews, about 2 hours, with the mosque entry fee included according to the booking page.
What the mosque itself asks of you
Everything below comes from the mosque’s own visitor information (Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Center, szgmc.gov.ae), except the details marked as press reports:
- Clothing. Long, loose-fitting, ankle-length clothes for women and men. Women must wear a headscarf. Press reports from September 2026 add that shorts and sleeveless tops are refused.
- Borrowed robes. The same reports say the centre no longer lends abayas to visitors in unsuitable clothes. Do not plan on borrowing; arrive dressed correctly. Instead, they say, you can buy one for Dh45 at Souq Al Jami, next to the mosque.
- Entry. Worshippers enter free. Other visitors now pay a small fee (AED 10 for visitors from outside the UAE, AED 5 for Emirates ID holders), and the centre asks visitors to pre-book an online access pass.
- Fridays. Friday opening is split, with a closed stretch around midday. If Friday is your only day, check the current hours first.
- Children are welcome but must stay under their parents’ constant supervision. Personal photos and video are allowed at the designated photo stops.
Hours and fees change, so confirm them on the mosque’s website before you go.
Four ways to see it
| Tour | What it is | Price | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guided walking tour at Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque | Guided walk at the mosque, about 2 hours | €17.81 | 4.7 / 5 (562 reviews) |
| City tour with Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and more | Guided city highlights incl. the Founder’s Memorial, 4 to 5 hours | €41.01 | 4.5 / 5 (532 reviews) |
| Grand Mosque, Royal Palace and Etihad Towers | Small group with hotel pickup, 6 hours | €67.03 | 4.9 / 5 (6,580 reviews) |
| Big Bus Hop-On Hop-Off | Open-top bus with a guided tour of the mosque | €36.33 | 4.2 / 5 (477 reviews) |
Two of the four state admission: the walking tour includes the mosque entry fee, and the six-hour tour lists admission to the Grand Mosque, Qasr Al Watan and Etihad Towers. For the city tour and the bus, the booking page shows whether the fee is included. The walking tour’s booking page also says the guide speaks English, the standard group can be up to 100 people, no clothing is provided to meet the dress code, and the tour is not suitable for wheelchair users. The mosque’s own guides speak English and Arabic only.
Which one fits
- Mosque only, with a guide: the walking tour. The description highlights the Swarovski crystal chandeliers.
- Several landmarks, one organised day: the six-hour small-group tour. It also covers Qasr Al Watan, which has its own article here.
- Flexible, stop by stop: the hop-on hop-off bus, with the mosque tour as one part of the ticket.
- Half a day with the mosque as one stop: the city tour. If you are unsure between the bus and the half-day options, see our comparison of Abu Dhabi city tours.
Our recommendation
For most visitors who simply want to see the mosque properly, book the walking tour and arrive dressed to the mosque’s rules. If you would rather see the mosque, the palace and a viewpoint in one go, the six-hour tour covers the most. Browse all city and mosque tours on GetYourGuide for dates and current prices.
